Аннотация: Сирия - одна из стран, которая находилась в процессе развития на всех уровнях, включая образование, но война, начавшаяся в 2011 году, привела к снижению уровня образования и деятельности академических библиотек. Описаны особенности сирийских высших учебных заведений и их библиотек с акцентом на четыре крупнейших государственных университета (Дамаск, Алеппо, Тишрин и Аль-Баас). Даны основные характеристики, включая библиотечные фонды 8 государственных и 22 частных высших учебных заведений. Организация библиотек сирийских учебных заведений отличается: общевузовская библиотека плюс библиотеки факультетов (колледжей), в то время как частные университеты имеют только одну библиотеку. Модифицированная и арабизированная десятичная классификация Дьюи используется во всех библиотеках для индексации, каталоги ведутся на бумажных карточках, современные информационные технологии не внедрены, все еще предпринимаются безуспешные попытки внедрить ALIS Koha и Horizon. Авторы показывают предпосылки для разработки концептуальных, информационных и функциональных моделей сетевой информационной системы университетских библиотек для модернизации библиотечных и информационных процессов до современного уровня.
